The capital of Srinagar was founded by Ashoka in the third century BC The valley had many Buddhist monuments and monasteries that were destroyed by the passage of Huns. The Hindu kings were later overtaken by the Muslims who imposed Islam. The valley was later conquered by Akbar.
Srinagar is the city of water, "Venice of the East", built on the shore of Lake Dal, near the River Jhelum and numerous canals, slide the famous houseboats, the floating homes created by the British to serve as their summer home at the time of the Raj. Its colonial houses, bridges and mosques give this ancient city a special charm. Because of its altitude, the city enjoys an excellent climate. You can also enjoy a ride on Dal Lake aboard a shikara, elegant floating palanquin. Visit the gardens: Nishat Bagh devoted to 12 signs of the zodiac and the most famous, the Shalimar Bagh, which includes several gardens on the banks of a canal.
